UK: Guidelines for importing medicines for personal use
Share
1. Does the UK allow individuals to import prescription medicines by mail order?
Allow. The UK has a relaxed policy on individuals ordering medicines for their own use from overseas mail order. There is usually no prohibition on personal importation of prescription medicines that are not authorised for use in the UK, as long as the medicines are for personal use only and the quantity does not exceed a three- month supply . This is legally an exemption for “personal use” and is not considered a supply of medicine.
2. Do I need to submit an application to the government in advance when importing medicines for my own use?
unnecessary. Imported medicines for personal use do not require prior notification to the MHRA or application for a license. However, there is a certain probability that customs will require you to provide a doctor's prescription to prove that the medicine is for personal use.
3. How much tariff do individuals need to pay for imported medicines?
The UK import tariff stipulates that most medicines for personal use are classified as zero-tariff items. It’s important to note that despite zero import duty, you may still be charged VAT on the medicines you import. The current standard VAT rate in the UK is 20% .
